Challenge
Traditional barcodes don’t include information about item expiration, making it difficult to track and flag items which are near expiration, or expired.
Solution:
- For Customers: A GS1 Digital Link 2D code contains the product expiration date. If the product is near expiration the POS can notify the customer as the transaction is occurring and a discount could be applied. If expired, the transaction can be halted, and a replacement in-date item found.
- For the Retailer: GS1 Digital Link can enable them to flag out-of-date or near expiring items in the warehouse, ensuring that older items can be sold first prior to expiry, and out of date items don’t make it to store shelves.
Outcome:
- Customers are more informed about fresh items near expiration
- Retailers can ensure that their fresh items are sold in the correct order
- Retailers can ensure expired items are disposed of before getting to shelves
